IIBA Meetup Wellington - Business Analysis Primer on Big Data
The session will be an attempt at a BA friendly primer on Big Data platforms at large, and what changes when specifying for BI development teams in such contexts.
Business Intelligence specialists are not software developers and typically deliver data access, platforms and capability more than they do applications. Because of that fuzzy positioning, BAs operating in BI have been historically expected to know more about technology than average to be able to access company data, understand its structures and specify business needs in ways that are actually possible for development team to implement.
A new paradigm of technical possibilities around data handling, storing, transforming and leveraging is under way. Business Intelligence is fast merging with Data Analytics, disrupting the late 20th century standards around Data Modelling. Data operations that were not possible before, or reserved to major multinationals - because of storage availability and cost, processing times limitations, locked down and costly proprietary systems etc. - are now within reach for most companies.
For Business Analysts and BI specialists alike, the conceptual challenge is real. The speed of change, the already impressive and ever increasing array of options has also made option fear / choice paralysis more likely for businesses.
